In January 2021, OKB "GIDROPRESS" celebrated the 75th anniversary of its foundation. OKB "GIDROPRESS" was established within the framework of the USSR nuclear project in accordance with the Decree of the Council of People's Commissars of the USSR No. 229-100СС/OP dated January 28, 1946, by the Order of the People's Commissar of Heavy Engineering of the USSR of February 1, 1946, in order to carry out work which would strengthen the defence capability of the country. The first project of the design organization was a technical design of the uranium-graphite reactor being the first industrial reactor for production of weapon-grade plutonium. Further on, designs were developed of research reactors for the Institute for Theoretical and Experimental Physics, experimental facilities for the Institute of Atomic Energy and Institute of Physics and Power Engineering. A basis was laid for future nuclear power plants. Since 1952 the activities have been underway on development of nuclear steam supply systems (NSSS) for nuclear-powered submarines with lead-bismuth liquid-metal coolant. Designs were developed of a surface prototype of nuclear NSSS with LMC (test bench 27/ВТ at the Institute of Physics and Power Engineering), NSSS of nuclear-powered submarines of Project 645, modular NSSS BM-40A of Project 705K. OKB “GIDROPRESS” was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labour for the complex of work on development of unparalleled reactor plants of this type. This technology is widely adopted and developed in the civil atomic power engineering – these are designs of OKB “GIDROPRESS” for reactor plants (RP) with fast neutron reactors and heavy lead-bismuth liquid-metal coolant. OKB “GIDROPRESS” developed heat exchanging equipment, including steam generators, for the world's first NPP, commissioned in 1954 in Obninsk. Since 1955 the activities of OKB “GIDROPRESS” have been associated with development of reactor plants with water-cooled water-moderated power (VVER) reactors for nuclear power engineering. The activities pertaining to VVER designs, the same as for the world’s first NPP design, were conducted under the leadership of outstanding scientists, Igor Kurchatov and Anatoly Aleksandrov. The first Unit with VVER was commissioned in 1964 at Novovoronezh NPP. Later on, the organization developed a series of more powerful and advanced reactors of this type. The design V-213, used for NPPs in a number of European countries, occupies a special place among the reactors. “Loviisa” NPP, located in Finland, became the first NPP of this type. The experience in construction of this plant turned out to be important both for solving some new technical problems related to NPP safety assurance, and from the viewpoint of designing. The design V-187 for Novovoronezh NPP Unit 5 became the first design of 1000 MW VVER reactor plant. A lot of new engineering solutions were implemented in the design, including application of new steels, and it was the first time the reactor plant was placed in reinforced concrete containment in order to improve safety level. The next step was development of the standard design of V-320 reactor plant with VVER-1000 integrating the positive experience of all preceding designs of VVER technology. The design was implemented at 24 Units of Russian and foreign NPPs and became the basis for the next designs of high-power RP. Totally, 78 Units with VVER reactor plants were constructed and commissioned in accordance with designs of the organization. The activities pertaining to designs of the power plants with fast neutron sodium-cooled reactor plants (BN) were equally important. The design of pilot reactor plant BOR-60, which was fully designed by OKB “GIDROPRESS”, gave rise to a new direction in development of nuclear power engineering. Later on, this power engineering technology was implemented with participation of a number of leading enterprises of ROSATOM: OKBM as a designer of reactors, OKB “GIDROPRESS” as a designer of steam generators, IPPE as a scientific advisor and many others. The plant with BN-350 reactor was constructed in Shevchenko (now Aktau), Kazakhstan, the Units with BN-600 and BN-800 were constructed at Beloyarsk NPP. Russia is the only country in the world which successfully uses this technology in nuclear power engineering. Designers of OKB “GIDROPRESS” have a unique opportunity to train technical solutions applied in their designs using the experimental and research facilities of the organization. The experimental and research facilities include the full-scale test benches where life, qualification, routine and acceptance tests are performed for structural elements of reactors of VVER type under conditions which are closest to full-scale ones. In 2000, serial production of high technology science-based equipment for NPPs was established for diversification of the organization activities. The pitch electromagnet drive SHEM-3 of the control and protection system for VVER-type reactor plants is the main serial product manufactured by OKB “GIDROPRESS”. OKB “GIDROPRESS” plays one of the key roles in the main business area of the State Corporation ROSATOM and JSC “Atomenergomash”, i.e. nuclear power engineering. The enterprise conducts a complex of design, calculational-theoretical, experimental, research and production activities for development of reactor plants for different types of NPPs. Designer’s supervision is performed at all the stages of life cycle of the designed equipment. The organization has been closely collaborating with its committed partners in Russia, most of which are working within the scope of ROSATOM. OKB "GIDROPRESS" has also been cooperating extensively with foreign companies. In 1985, OKB “GIDROPRESS” was awarded CZSR Order of Labour for the long-term cooperation and assistance in development of Czechoslovak industry. Currently, VVER reactor plants are successfully operated at 21 nuclear power plants in Russia and abroad. The geography of presence of OKB “GIDROPRESS” designs is constantly broadened. Construction of new Units with VVER reactor plants is underway at various stages in a number of countries. VVER reactor plant designs represent a significant contribution to achievement of ROSATOM’s strategic goal for boosting its share in the international markets. Today, ROSATOM's portfolio of foreign customers includes 36 NPP Units. All these Units will be equipped with VVER reactor plants designed by OKB “GIDROPRESS”. OKB “GIDROPRESS” was one of the first to introduce ROSATOM Production System (PSR) into the organization's business processes. Based on the results of 2017, OKB GIDROPRESS was awarded the title of “PSR Leader”. This title was confirmed at the end of 2018 and 2019. Currently, the organization is actively implementing PSR projects and providing staff training on PSR methodology. The experience gained, quality of the work performed, advanced design practice, modern production facilities, science-production interaction, use of modern design technologies, adherence to ROSATOM strategy enable the staff of OKB “GIDROPRESS” to successfully meet the challenges and face the future with optimism.
